The National Department of Education has identified certain
outcomes which need to be met and direct all teaching and learning in South
Africa. These outcomes are outlined in the National Curriculum Statement (NCS).
The curriculum consists of all the skills, knowledge and values planned for the
learners to achieve holistic development and what areas of learning should be
covered and how this is organized.
It is important that any school teaching the reception year
(Grade R) works towards the goals as prescribed in the NCS and ensure a child’s
cognitive, physical, emotional and social skills are met for a lifelong path of
learning.
We at the Eastry follow the prescribed learning and developmental
outcomes as set out by the Department of Education.
There are learning outcomes for each of the eight learning areas
which are applicable to all school grades (from grade R to grade 9).
1.
Languages
2.
Mathematics
3.
Natural Sciences
4.
Social Sciences
5.
Technology
6.
Economic and Management
7.
Life Orientation
8.
Arts and culture
In the foundation phase which are grades R to Grade 3 these
learning areas are divided into three Learning Programmes.
Literacy - 40%
Numeracy - 35%
Life skills - 25%
OBE principals are applied in the classroom to the three learning
programmes. The learning outcomes are repeated methodically in accordance with
the prescribed allocation of time from the education department.
An outcome is the end result of a learning experience which you
know, can do and demonstrate you know for example:
Reading text
Cutting a shape
Expressing ideas
Solving problems
Work Schedules and learning units (lesson plans) are planned and
compiled. The Work Schedule is a year long plan of how teaching and learning
will be sequenced and paced in a particular grade.
